Spend a Day at the Athens Farmers Market

When it comes to food, nothing is better than fresh food. There is something about the taste that makes it just a little better and different. Restaurants recognize this as well and strive to use only the best ingredients for their guests. Over the recent years, a trend that is coming more and more popular is knowing exactly where your food is coming from and individuals buying their food directly from farmers, usually at farmers markets. While this isn’t a new concept with the boom of grocery stores all around the need for farmer’s markets has gone down but now has come back strong. Here at Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls, we love having fresh food and frequently enjoy going to the Athens Farmers Market as often as we can. Thinking of heading to the Athens Farmers Market? Check out what you will find there.

While most farmers’ markets close over the winter months, the Athens Farmers Market is open year round. It is open every Saturday from 9am to 12pm and from April to December it is open on Wednesdays from 9am to 12pm as well. Starting in the 1970’s, the Athens Farmers Market only featured a handful of farmers and then quickly grew to a dozen and then more as the years went on. It has had many different locations and now it is located at 1000 E State Street in the parking lot of the Market on State.

When you go to the Athens Farmers Market you will be pleased with the amount and the different types of vendors. There will be different fruit and vegetable farmers, orchardists, bakers, cheesemakers, and just places to get a bite to eat while you are there. We have some of our favorite vendors that are known for quality food. Some of those are, Blackberry Sage Farm, who is known for their heirloom tomatoes, soup beans, okra, and more. Another is Crumbs Bakery who has some of the best breads (including gluten free), cakes, pastries, and more. If you are looking for an amazing local meat source, be sure to check out King Family Farm which has pork, chicken, and turkey as well as eggs and raw pet food which will help keep them healthy as well. You will also find vendors at the Athens Farmers Market who have flowers and chocolate and much more as well.

In the news for the Athens Farmers Market is having the winter market indoors. This would be very beneficial for vendors as well as visitors so everyone can stay warm during our cold winter months. The board at the Athens Farmers Market is thinking about adding a Thursday evening market this spring that would give locals another night to shop for fresh food. Also, be on the lookout for Athens Farmers Market events. Some in the past have been a Junior Chef school which is a great way to get your children not only interested in food but learning a life skill that will serve them for years to come.
