About Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave derives its name from Richard Rowe, a hermit who lived under the rock shelter in the early 1800s. His family moved to Ohio from the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. Shortly after, Richard stumbled upon the Hocking Region while traveling along the Scioto River.

He lived out his life in the area and is buried beneath the ledge of the main recess cave.

Other residents of the cave were two brothers, Nathaniel and Pat Rayon, who came to the area in 1795. Both brothers are buried near the cave. Old Man’s Cave also served as a stopover for the Shawnee Indians on their route from West Virginia to villages along the Scioto River.

2 of the Best Things to Do at Old Man’s Cave

  1. Hiking

The Old Man’s Cave area can be divided into five sections: Upper Falls, Upper Gorge, Middle Falls, Lower Falls, and Lower Gorge. The magnificent gorge cuts through Blackhand sandstone and serves an opportunity for visitors to peer into the earth’s subsurface. The main hiking trail starts at the Welcome Center and takes a relatively straight route through the gorge to Old Man’s Cave. The trail then continues to the Sphinx Head and Overlook rock formations. Whispering Cave, one of the Hocking Hills’ newest attractions, is also accessible from the hiking trails. With plenty of man-made steps and bridges along the way, this route is a relatively easy stroll for visitors of all skill levels.

  1. Annual Events

If you’re planning to visit Ohio in the winter, make plans to attend the annual Hocking Hills Winter Hike. This guided six-mile trek takes hikers from Old Man’s Cave to Ash Cave and features plenty of fascinating stories along the way. Layered clothing and good footwear are recommended.
