Logan, Ohio History: The Origins of Our Town
Established in 1816, the small town of Logan, Ohio in the Hocking Hills grew slowly since its location isolated it from many major cities. However, in 1825, approximately 250 people resided in the town. By 1840, the number of residents had doubled and the town contained four stores and two churches. Logan’s population continued to increase over the next four decades, and by 1880, 2,666 people resided in the community. The town then had three newspaper offices, six churches, two banks, and a railroad that passed through the bustling community.
The Hocking River provided sufficient water power for the purpose of operating grist and sawmills, and several industries blossomed due to the area’s rich mineral resources. In addition, the clay soils of the Hocking Valley helped Ohio to become a leader in clay products. The firebrick industry manufactured products like clay tile, building and paving bricks, and clay sewer pipes. Evidence of this industry can be seen in the many brick houses of the area, and clay is still an important staple in our region.

Displays include an 1898 Steam Auto, a Conestoga wagon brought from Pennsylvania in 1837, a black walnut piano shipped from New Orleans in 1880, as well as a large collection of furniture, pictures, books, and artifacts. The Hocking County Historical Society’s goal is to educate visitors on the heritage of our area, making this museum a wonderful family-friendly destination.
