Top 5 Stops Along the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway
The Hocking Hills Scenic Byway is a self-guided tour along State Route 374 that’s about 26 miles long. It also connects the most popular sites within Hocking Hills State Park. We consider it one of the best scenic drives in Ohio for this reason alone. Autumn is the best time to explore this route, as it boasts vibrant views of Hocking Hills fall foliage.
The adventure begins on State Route 374 on US 33 in Rockbridge. Here are some of the best attractions you’ll find along the way!
1. Cantwell Cliffs
Cantwell Cliffs are one of the best sights in the Hocking Hills. However, it can be challenging to navigate the trails that lead to the cliffs, which were created by erosion from Buck Run River. Once at the cliffs, you can find a fascinating reddish-brown stone, a rock shelter, a beautiful valley floor, and the popular Fat Woman’s Squeeze.
2. Cedar Falls
Cedar Falls is one of our favorite spots in the Hocking Hills. This oasis in the middle of the forest boasts a beautiful waterfall and hemlock-covered rock formations. It’s a great place to reconnect with nature!
3. Ash Cave
Ash Cave is the largest recess cave in Ohio! In addition to the enormous 700-foot long cave, this Hocking Hills State Park attraction also boasts a magnificent waterfall at its center. It’s a great all-seasons attraction, as visitors can travel to Ash Cave to see the breathtaking frozen waterfall in the winter.
4. Rock House
Visit the only true cave in Hocking Hills State Park with a hike to Rock House. Enjoy a quarter-mile hike along rocky terrain before you arrive at Rock House. Once you’re there, look around you at amazing rock formations and the 25-foot tall cave ceiling!
5. Conkle’s Hollow State Nature Preserve
Conkle’s Hollow State Nature Preserve is another great stop along the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway. This 87-acre Ohio nature preserve consists of steep sandstone cliffs, massive gorges, and cascading waterfalls. Gorge Trail is one of our favorite hikes at Conkle’s Hollow!
