Everything You Need to Know about Hocking Hills Moonshine
Opened in 2014, the Hocking Hills Moonshine distillery in Logan, Ohio, is the only moonshine distillery in Hocking County and is the perfect place to go for a taste of history. In the 1920’s, illegal distillers thrived in the nearby town of New Straitsville and created Hocking Hills moonshine that was famous for its high quality and unique taste. Today, guests can visit the distillery and take free tours to watch moonshine being made, learn the history of prohibition, and sample some of the facility’s best selections – and it’s all just a quick 20-minute drive from the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls! Here are some things you should know about Hocking Hills Moonshine.
What Is Hocking Hills Moonshine?
Hocking Hills moonshine is made using local corn and Hocking Hills spring water. The water has a sweet mineral quality and gives the beverage its distinct flavor and smooth taste. The moonshine can also be infused with flavors like blackberry, raspberry, watermelon, cherry, and apple. Yum!
The Hocking Hills Moonshine Distillery
Although moonshine is now made and sold legally, distillery owners uses a century-old recipe and old-school techniques to create the 80-proof Original Recipe moonshine. If you want something with a little more kick, Hocking Hills Moonshine also offers a 120 proof version called “Buckeye Lightning”. On a free distillery tour, you’ll see several original copper pot stills and can learn about the process of making shine from start to finish. You can also check out the tasting room in Logan, where Ray St. Clair, Brian St. Clair and Eric St. Clair (yes, they are all related) make and sell jars of moonshine. The distillery is open Monday through Wednesday from 11 AM to 8 PM and Thursday through Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM.
Plan a trip to the New Straitsville Moonshine Festival
Each year, the New Straitsville Moonshine Festival takes place over the course of five days and offers tons of fun events and attractions for locals and visitors alike. Guests can enjoy live entertainment, carnival rides, parades, and flea market vendors, as well as an awesome Moonshine Still Display that shows how moonshine is made. Be sure to stop by the Straitsville Special liquor store before you leave and grab a few bottles to bring home with you!
