About Conkle’s Hollow State Park
Conkle’s Hollow is located in the scenic Hocking Hills region. The steep sandstone cliffs, carved from Black Hand sandstone, rise nearly 200 feet above the valley floor. Conkle’s Hollow is named for W.J. Conkle, who carved his name and the date 1797 into the sandstone on the west wall of the gorge.
The Geography
The prominent Black Hand sandstone in Conkle’s Hollow State Park makes the geography here very unique. It is estimated that this part of Ohio was underwater about 350 million years ago. The flow of the water created and carved the Black Hand sandstone into cliffs and gorges. The gorge is one of the deepest in Ohio, and the preserve has some of the most stunning scenic overlooks in the area. With gorgeous scenery and multiple cascading waterfalls, it doesn’t get much better than this preserve.
Plants and Wildlife
The valley floor of Conkle’s Hollow is covered by a profusion of native plants, wildflowers, and hardwood forests. If you’d like to see everything in bloom, we recommend visiting in the spring! As you climb the cliffs and explore around the gorge, you will find different habitats that are home to an array of plants and animals.
Hiking
Conkle’s Hollow State Park is home to about four miles of excellent hiking trails. These paths travels around the rim of the cliffs, so you can see some breathtaking views. If you’re looking to see fall foliage, there are many overlooks that are above the treetops! Check out this brochure for maps and more information about the park.
Do I Need a Permit?
You do not currently need a Preserve Permit for Conkle’s Hollow State Park, but you do need one if you plan on visiting others. Always make sure to check and see before you visit!
Are Pets Allowed?
Pets are not allowed at this preserve, but a great alternative is the Hocking Hills State Park.
