Ash Cave, Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio, USAHistory of Ash Cave

Ash Cave, located in the Hocking Hills State Park, is named for large amounts of ash that early settlers discovered in the cave. No one knows exactly where the ashes came from, but many believe that Native Americans used Ash Cave for their shelter hundreds of years ago. The largest pile of ashes found here was thirty feet wide and three feet deep and is thought to come from their campfires.

When it was first found by early settlers, Ash Cave was used as a temporary church. Keep an eye out for the Pulpit Rock at the opening of the enormous cave!

Ash Cave measures nearly 700 feet from end to end and is 100 feet deep. At the center, there is a stunning waterfall that rains over the recess. If you want to see the waterfall, we recommend heading over in the spring when the snow is melting. During this time, you can also see the colorful wildflowers that blanket the forest floor! Or, you can see the falls turn into an incredible ice formation in the winter.

Visiting The Cave

The trail leading to Ash Cave is paved, so it is easily accessible for everyone including those in wheelchairs and strollers. This easy hike is fun for all ages, and there is even a picnic area by the parking lot for you to enjoy. However, we recommend getting one of our brown bag lunches and eating it by the cave itself so you can take in its beauty as you relax.
