What Kind of Animals Are in Hocking Hills?
There’s tons of Hocking Hills wildlife! The forests in our area create a great habitat for animals to thrive. The most prevalent species you will see are white-tailed deer, barred owls, ruffed grouse, and even bobcats. If you are fishing, you’ll come across underwater wildlife such as smallmouth bass, channel catfish, white crappie, quillback, saugeye, and more.
The Basics of Tracking
If you want to see Hocking Hills wildlife, your best bet is to go into the Hocking Hills State Park with a little tracking knowledge. Tracking our animals isn’t hard with prior education! Here are some tips:
- Tracking begins with just one print. Once you see the print, you can look a little closer to see which way the animal went and follow it from there.
- Take a picture or drawing of the track. Don’t rely on your memory! You can easily look up a track when you’re back home if you have a photo or sketch.
- Consider the condition of a track. Take a moment to see how fresh the track is. For example, if you see a set of tracks in frost or morning dew, the animal was there before sunrise.
Can You Hunt in Hocking Hills?
Yes! Hunting is allowed in the Hocking Hills State Forest as long as you go by the regulations of the Division of Wildlife. The white-tailed deer population thrives here, and hunters keep them from overpopulating.
Conkles Hollow, Sheick Hollow, and Little Rocky Hollow are off-limits to hunters, and you must be at least 400 feet away from any building. The inn is close to places for hunting, but we do not allow hunting on our property.
