Steep cliffs, jagged rock formations, and giant boulders make this region ideal for beginners and experienced climbers alike. Where to Find the Best Hocking Hills Rock Climbing

Hocking State Forest

The 99-acre rock climbing and rappelling area at Hocking State Forest is the only facility on state land that permits rock climbing. Sandstone cliffs and overhangs provide a variety of challenges for climbers of all skill levels. The forest also offers unique plantlife and wildlife that make a beautiful backdrop as you climb. The climbing area is located on Big Pine Road, one mile east of Conkle’s Hollow. There’s a parking area within walking distance of the rock and cliff face. Be sure to use quality equipment and climb with experienced people.

Earth Water Rock Outdoor Adventures

If you’re just starting out, Earth Water Rock Outdoor Adventures will teach you how to climb. This company specializes in beginner instruction and offers guided 3-hour, half-day, or full day tours for newbies. First, your guide will meet you in the Hocking State Forest parking area to show you the equipment you’ll be using. You’ll be fitted with a climbing harness, helmet, and climbing shoes. You’ll then discuss relevant safety concerns before beginning the hike to the cliff.

Climbers will start on relatively easy climbs to get comfortable with vertical terrain. You’ll then have the chance to advance to more challenging climbs. Those who already have some experience can also inquire about the Gym to Crag course.
